Wedding Cake Flavors
Naturally the best flavor for your wedding cake is your favorite one. At the same time, it is helpful to keep the style of the wedding in mind and to try to select a dessert which complements it. The most traditional flavor is the classic white buttercream cake. If you are a fan of traditional wedding elements like roses, lace, and pearl earrings, this would be an ideal cake for your reception. You can always think about adding a layer of jam or cream to your white cake. Flavored buttercream, such as raspberry or mocha, will be delicious yet subtle. A jam or fresh fruit filling (lemon curd, anyone?) will be bolder in taste.
Chocolate is another top flavor for wedding cakes. Rich dark chocolate is definitely a top choice when the groom has a vote, and many brides like it as well. It is particularly good for a fall or winter cake, as the sweet ending to a rich meal. Frost it with chocolate icing for a doubly good taste. In the summer, an all chocolate confection can seem a bit heavy; if that is your flavor of choice, use a lighter white frosting to tone down the richness a bit. Not that anyone is going to complain about a chocolate cake, no matter what the season!
Fruit flavors can be light and refreshing for warm weather receptions. Try a lemon-infused confection for a July wedding. Or choose a tart and lively key lime flavor, which would be especially great for a Florida event. To infuse your cake with a tropical flair, choose a coconut frosting over key lime – you can bet that everyone will be coming back for seconds! Shaved coconut will look great as the main cake decoration.
Red velvet is fast becoming a favorite of brides and grooms. It is especially popular with Southern brides, as a nod to their roots, but it is also loved by couples nationwide for the signature red hue. A sweet moist flavor with a bit of cocoa, this is a great option for any time of the year. In the spring or summer, choose a white buttercream frosting or go with a rich chocolate frosting in the fall to enhance the cocoa in the cake. The best part about choosing your wedding cake is that in the end, there is no real wrong answer – after all, everyone loves cake!

The traditional wedding cake topper is the bride and groom pair. These small statues are designed to resemble miniature versions of the actual newlyweds, right down to their white gowns, pearl bridal jewelry sets, and tuxedos. Many couples find the traditional bride and groom topper to be too boring, but they can be wonderful for a vintage inspired wedding. You can find actual antiques dating back to the 1920s to add just the perfect vintage flair to your wedding cake.
For a formal wedding, one of the most popular styles of cake topper is the custom crystal monogram. This is a fabulous accent for the bride who loves all things glitzy, from beaded gowns to crystal bridal jewelry sets. You can have one large single initial from the groom’s last name (if the bride is taking his name), a first initial from the bride and the groom, or a special crystal monogram made with their shared last name initial in the center and a first initial for each newlywed on either side. The effect is very glamorous and elegant, wonderful for an evening wedding.
Nature can be a great place to get inspiration for a wedding cake topper. For a fall wedding, a forest theme cake would be marvelous. Frost a rich spice cake with a chocolate icing textured to look like bark then top with marzipan mushrooms, leaves, and tiny forest animals. Or make a lovely spring cake with each tier frosted in a different pastel color. Tie it all together by topping with a collection of colorful butterflies. The effect will be whimsical and very pretty.
Consider your wedding theme as a great source of ideas for your topper. Having a beach wedding? Decorate the top tier of the cake with faux coral, seashells, and starfish. For a Winter Wonderland reception, a tiny sleigh with bride and groom figurines would be a cute alternative to the expected snowflake topper. Or top a garden wedding cake with a tiny vase filled with blossoms. This is a great way to enhance the theme of your wedding while making your cake even lovelier.

Valentine’s Day is one of the most romantic days of the year, and it is a great time to get married. If you are one of the lucky Valentine’s brides, then you will surely want to bring some of this romance into the design of your wedding. There are many ideas for creating a charming Valentine’s wedding cake.
The traditional colors of Valentine’s Day are red, pink, and white, and these are great colors to use on a cake design. You can choose to use just one or two, or go all out and design a cake using all three colors. You can use some of the classic Valentine’s motifs, or you can choose a more modern design.
A very feminine look would be a pale pink cake with an intricate lace or doily design over it. To keep with the idea of old-fashioned femininity, each layer could be trimmed out with a faux pearl border, made to look like timeless pearl bridal jewelry. You could either go with a simple row of frosting “pearls” spaced around the cake, or you could have the baker create a realistic looking strand of pearls with a fancy clasp, strung around the center tier of the cake like its own bridal jewelry (which is a very hot trend in wedding cakes, and a nice way to marry old-fashioned design with current trends).
More whimsical brides can find other ways to take advantage of a Valentine’s theme cake. One of everyone’s favorite parts of the holiday is the conversation hearts – those little heart shaped candies that have sayings on them, like “Be mine” or “You’re the one”. An idea for a very unique and fun wedding cake would be to have a cake in a white or pale pink background color, and then have larger than life conversation hearts done in fondant and scattered around the cake. The hearts should be large, so that they make a bold statement and are easy to read. In addition to the classic conversation heart phrases, be sure to include ones with the names of the bride and groom.
One of the neat things about Valentine’s Day is that it means something a little different to each couple. When you are designing your wedding cake, choose a style that expresses your sentiments. Whether you prefer something ultra romantic, sophisticated and a little sexy, or fun and kitschy, you will end up with a unique wedding cake that will wow your guests.

Chocolate Cakes for Fall Weddings
Fall weddings are all about enjoying the warmth and richness of the season. Unlike a summer wedding, when food should be light and refreshing, in the autumn, you can indulge in richer flavors. And when it comes to a rich wedding cake, this can only mean one thing: chocolate!
Many people absolutely love chocolate, and want to use it instead of the classic white wedding cake. At some times of the year, brides are more likely to hide the chocolate cake under white or pastel frosting, or to relegate it to the groom’s cake. But in the fall, the warm color of chocolate icing is a perfect match for the colors of the season.
There are certainly a large variety of chocolate cakes from which to choose. You can go with the classic basic chocolate, or choose a more exotic flavor like chocolate fudge, mocha, or truffle. Another tasty idea is to layer a chocolate cake with a fruit filling, such as raspberry or apricot. And then there is the frosting: you can opt for the smooth-as-glass effect of fondant icing, or go for the more natural look of a buttercream based frosting.
Chocolate cakes can be created in a design to match any wedding theme. You will want to make sure that your cake coordinates with the rest of the affair.
Because the cake has become such an important style element, brides look at them almost like another accessory, like their headpiece or bridal jewelry. In fact, it is very common for brides to choose the details of their cake based on the elements of their bridal jewelry, such as using a crystal monogram as the cake topper to tie in with the crystals in their wedding jewelry.
Fall weddings often have a rustic look, and you can very easily bring that into your wedding cake. Chocolate frosting with a rougher bark-like texture makes the perfect backdrop for tiny little fall pumpkins, gourds, and flowers. These can either be real, or created from marzipan or gum paste. The tiny little sugar fruits and flowers are truly works of art.
The best part about having a chocolate cake for your fall wedding is that it will be as delicious as it is good looking. Imagine how happy your guests will be when they walk into the reception and spy the tasty chocolate wedding cake. And just think about how happy you will be when you get to share that first piece of yummy cake as husband and wife!

The wedding cake is no longer a tasty afterthought to the rest of the reception. The cake is another chance to tie the wedding theme together. Couples today want their cakes to be unique, personalized, and of course, delicious!
Trends in cakes include: black and white, patterns like Swiss dots or scrollwork, and monograms. Couples are even custom ordering cakes with their wedding vows written in calligraphy.
Another important source of inspiration for a special cake is the bride’s gown and accessories. Cake designers will recreate the look of lace or embroidery in frosting. Some brides use their bridal jewelry as a design source. For instance, a bride bedecked in Swarovski crystals can have her cake dusted with metallic shimmer for a totally glamorous effect.
The idea is that the cake should express the personal style of the newlyweds. Couples expect their cake to astonish their wedding guests both with its’ amazing look and divine taste.
